October 11, 2008 Let’s Rock ‘n Roll was held at the Saltmills Diner to kick off the 7th Arts season.
We dressed up in our Happy Days best and came to dance the night away with DJ’s Anna Bourne and Candy Barrotti. We started collecting donations for the Hurricane Relief Fund, and launched the TCFAF season membership drive.
November 14/15, 2008 An Evening of Performances had everything. The beautiful voices, of the
TCI Youth Chorale. A duet by Kay Weir and Addison Stoddard. NADA and solos by David Been,
Randy Ellis, Candy Barrotti, Isabelle Boily, Shara Goldsmith, Anna Bourne, and Cora Malcolm.
Precision dancing by the PAB Ballerinas and
The New Breed Dancer. Knee-slapping comedy and rockin’ Musicians
with two outstanding bands:
Sally Greenwood's Among Others and
David Bowen's Soul Redemption.
All the artists donated their time and talent to raise money for the Hurricane Relief Efforts, a cause that TCFAF had been championing since September.
TCFAF’s Board voted to donate the funds they had been collecting to the Rotary’s project to rebuild the sorely needed sanitation system in Grand Turk. John Lawson of Rotary spoke briefly on Saturday evening about the project that will give the residents back this function and prevent the spread of disease.
The fundraising efforts were a 50/50 Raffle and the donation of the proceeds from the TCFAF Cash/Snack Bar. Between the two evenings’ donations and anonymous donors, Cora Malcolm, President of TCFAF, was able to present a check to the Rotary on Thursday, 20th November at Iguana Restaurant for $9,125.
December 13, 2008 A Pirates’ Christmas Spectacular was held at Brayton Hall with children dressed as Pirates.
Craft booths, face painting, a drawing contest of the best pirate, a premiere showing of the 2007 Panto,
Pirates of the Turks and Caicos - Legend of the Black Conch and a wonderful Children’s Musical Concert
featuring the TCI Youth Chorale led by Kay Weir, Addison Stoddard & Wendy Hayward, featured the PAB Ballerinas,
The New Breed Dancers, the Folklore Explorers, participating schools – Holy Family Academy and the Ashcroft School, and lots of wonderful solos by the choir.
The big surprise was that we were looking out for Santa Claus all afternoon, but he did not appear. Finally the Pirates Mary Reid, Peg Leg Percy, and Lucky the Potcake stepped in to help, and “lo and behold” it was Lucky the Potcake who brought Santa in on the Pirate ship through the wall!
March 3/5, 2009 Pages to Pirouettes a troupe from Philadelphia conducted outreach Arts’ Workshops promoting Theatre, Dance, Art, Literature and Music at the Edward C. Gartland Youth Centre, and performed Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty at the local schools and Brayton Hall.
TCFAF and the Youth Centre forged a strategic partnership in serving the youth of the islands. The two groups worked together to bring in Pages to Pirouettes for the week. Pages’ mission to enrich cultural awareness and appreciation in the community by bringing the art of story ballet to young audiences, proved a perfect match for the Centre. With the success of the acting workshops from Pages’ Scott Cannon, in Improv Acting, Story Telling, and Monolog, much new young talent was uncovered.
The culmination of the efforts of the week resulted in a very rich production of both Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty at Brayton Hall on Saturday, March 7. Over 14 local dancers rehearsed all week with the visiting artists to take roles in the production to the enchanting music of Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky. Four of our accomplished local dancers performed solos in Sleeping Beauty and ten local students re-prised the beautiful Sleeping Beauty Garland Waltz, which was performed last at the Governor’s 2007 Christmas Party.
One of the popular workshops presented was The Many Tales of Cinderella. Pages’ brought over a dozen versions of the fairy tale from several countries, including China, Cambodia, the Philippines, Korea, the Caribbean, India, etc. Pages left them all with TCFAF as a donation, and a fond remembrance of a most unforgettable week!
May 11/16, 2009 Dancescapes Luminosity a program from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), returned to Provo with 20 dancers to showcase many different choreographic styles in a spectacular new show. Dancescapes held week long workshops for dancers of all ages. Eight schools and over 1,000 students were visited and entertained by the UNLV dancers.
The week culminated in two luminous performances at Brayton Hall on Friday and Saturday. Seventeen of the local dancers, who participated in the Master Classes during the week, were featured in the original piece, Icarus, choreographed by Louis Kavouras, along with 18 of the UNLV dancers, making a smashing finale of 35 dancers!
The community all rallied, as accommodations for the 20 dancers were donated by Ed and Carol Gartland at Seven Stars, Karen Whitt of The Somerset, Micky Shoulak and David Blackburn of Lisselan Castle, and Barbara and Mark Pankhurst of Stargazer Villa. Even the restaurants rallied to help feed the dancers, catering all lunches and dinners – Bay Bistro/Aqua, Caicos Bakery, Fresh, Gourmet Goods/Fairways, Graceway IGA, Hemingways, Horse Eye Jack’s, Magnolia, Mango Reef, Pine Cay’s Meridian Club, Saltmills Diner, Somewhere at Coral Gardens, Tiki Hut and
Top O’ the Cove.
